Club Activities

The Red Ribbon Club is a movement started by the Government of India in schools and colleges, through which students spread awareness of HIV and AIDS. It sets out to instil a charitable mind in students — encouraging healthy lifestyles and the promotion of regular voluntary blood donation.

At our school the club was formed especially for girls, to build the spirit of good health alongside moral values, life-skill activities and leadership.

The club collects and shares information about history and heritage. Students find interesting facts, exchange ideas on care and preservation, and research important historic events and their impact — both now and in the long term. The discussion and research lead to a better knowledge of the rich heritage within and outside India.

• Pencil sketches of a chosen monument, with a presentation on why it matters as heritage
• Warli painting, presented with great enthusiasm
• Online crossword on traditional games, picture quiz on heritage sites, speech on Kamarajar, presentation on endangered species
• Poster making on “Our Heritage, Our Pride”, and festivals of India presented through Mandala art
• Video quizzes on Independence Day, freedom fighters and their slogans, and world heritage sites

A unique platform that develops an interest in the study and collection of coins. Activities are built to instil curiosity about the origin and evolution of coins across different periods and parts of the world. Some students arrived as collectors; others took it up as a hobby after joining.

The Eco Club was started on 22 June 2021 to bring out the hidden talents of our children through active participation in environmental issues, and to build awareness of how those issues can be solved day to day.

Activities

• Art from waste — identifying waste at home and converting it into something useful
• Debate — the consequences of increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
• Photographs of environmental issues, analysed and discussed by the children
• Slogans on pollution
• Presentations and debates on the Bhopal gas tragedy, the history of tsunamis, and the effects of vehicle emissions

The English Literary Club was established to help students build self-efficacy and confidence, and to widen language work beyond grammar and reading. It gives students the chance to practise English in a casual setting, through activities such as:

• Extempore and mono acting
• Poetry writing and recitation
• Quiz, debate and elocution
• Expansion of proverbs
• Word grid, spellathon and anagrams
• Conversation practice

தயக்கமின்றி தமிழிலே பேசுவோம்: மாணவர்களுக்கு ஆங்கிலம் கலவாமல் அன்னைத் தமிழ் மொழியிலேயே தங்களைப் பற்றிய அறிமுக உரை கூறப் பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்பட்டு, மாணவர்களும் ஆவலுடன் கூறி முடித்தனர்.

சிந்தனையைத் தூண்டும் தமிழ்ப் புதிர்கள், விடுகதைகள்: மாணவர்களது சிந்தனை மற்றும் அறிவை வளர்க்கும் பொருட்டு வளர்தமிழில் விடுகதைகள் மற்றும் புதிர்கள் கேட்கப்பட்டது. படைப்பாற்றலை ஊக்குவிக்கும் பொருட்டு தலைப்புகள் தரப்பட்டு கவிதைகள் எழுதினர்.

செந்தமிழ்த் தொகுப்பாளர்: ஏதேனும் ஒரு விழா நிகழ்வை செந்தமிழில் தொகுத்து வழங்க பயிற்சியளிக்கப்பட்டு மாணவர்களும் நிகழ்ச்சிகளைத் தொகுத்து வழங்கினர். செய்தித்தாள் வாசிக்கவும் பயிற்சியளிக்கப்பட்டது.

நமது பாரம்பரியம்! நமது பெருமை! பண்பாட்டைப் பறை சாற்றும் பாரம்பரியச் சின்னங்களைப் பற்றி கற்பிக்கப்பட்டது. மாணவர்களும் பாரம்பரியச் சின்னங்கள், விளையாட்டுகள், இசைக்கருவிகள் பற்றி ஆர்வமுடன் பேசினர்; ஓவியங்கள் வரைந்தனர்.

உலகப் பொதுமறையாம் திருக்குறள் ஒப்புவித்தல்: நீதி நூலாம் திருக்குறளின் மேன்மை பற்றி மாணவர்களுக்கு எடுத்துக் கூறப்பட்டது. குறிப்பிட்ட அதிகாரங்கள் வழங்கப்பட்டு மாணவர்களும் குறள் மற்றும் பொருளை ஒப்புவித்தனர்.

கலைச்சொல் அறிவோம்: நவீன அறிவியல் கண்டுபிடிப்புகளுக்கு ஏற்ப ஆங்கிலச் சொற்களுக்கு இணையான தமிழ் சொற்களை அறியும் பொருட்டு கலைச்சொற்கள் கற்பிக்கப்பட்டது. முக்கிய தினங்கள் குறித்தும் கருத்தாடல் நடத்தப்பட்டது.

The Spell Bee Club focuses on new words — their meanings, spellings and pronunciation. To keep sessions interesting the club uses anagrams, puzzles, riddles, jumbled sentences, pictorial representations of proverbs, rebus and tongue twisters.

Newspaper reading is also part of the session. Using the Squid app and a live board, commonly mis-spelt words and silent letters are taught. The students take part enthusiastically and show real interest in collecting new words.

Students are shown presentations on a topic and given the background, then quizzed in three groups to test what they have retained. Topics have included:

• Flags and currencies of Asian countries
• Famous places and monuments in Europe and in India
• Mythology of India and folklore
• Olympic games and inventions in India
• Famous books and their authors
• Agriculture in India

Students also learn to build the presentations themselves — collecting sources from different websites, and practising leadership, communication, team spirit and time management along the way.

The basic concepts of social studies, taught through discussion and activity:

• The Big Bang; the universe, Pangaea, Panthalassa, continents and oceans
• Latitude and longitude — locating places on the Earth and in an atlas
• Indian states and their information
• Water bodies — isthmus, strait, delta and trench, with examples
• Weather, climate and global warming — changes, consequences and remedies
• Agriculture and the different revolutions — green, blue, pink, white, yellow, grey and black
• Important timelines and world heritage

The Maths Club helps children become maths ambassadors themselves. It motivates students to approach the subject with more interest and involvement, develops creative and innovative thinking, and builds the habit of self-solving and independent work. Each child keeps a notebook of the activities.

हिंदी क्लब गतिविधियाँ प्रारंभ करने का मुख्य उद्देश्य छात्रों की राष्ट्रभाषा हिंदी के प्रति रुचि उत्पन्न करना, भाषायी दक्षताएँ जैसे सुनना, बोलना, पढ़ना और लिखना आदि क्षमताओं का विकास तथा छात्रों के हिन्दी उच्चारण में शुद्धता लाना है। छात्रों की गतिविधियों को छोटी-छोटी इकाइयों में बांटा गया है:

• शब्दाक्षरी
• मुखाभ्यास
• शीर्षक के अनुसार हिन्दी भाषण

The Health and Fitness Club motivates students to take up yoga and to follow practical health advice. Students learn yoga with real interest, follow the guidance given during class hours, and carry the practice into their leisure time.

Every child has their own interests, talents and potential, and the Science Club is where they bring them out. After the club introduced the theme “Innovative ideas for inventing the basic needs”, the teachers were genuinely astonished by what the students produced — a foot mop, a magnet-based slipper to maintain social distance, a motorised umbrella fixed to a bike, and more.

Students reported the real joy of learning something new, and a growing appetite for creating things of their own.

The Art Club focuses on expression and creativity, encouraging students to put thoughts and feelings into visual form — from two dimensions to three — and to tap talents they may not know they have.

Students from Classes 6, 7 and 8 take part in Indian art forms and crafts: Madhubani, Kalamkari, Phad, Warli, Kerala mural and 3D drawing; and in craft — kirigami, origami, clay work, thematic posters, paper craft and recycled craft.
